Sharjah Business Summit to shine spotlight on innovation in logistics

Sharjah Business Summit 2017, organised by Gulftainer, the world’s largest privately owned independent port operator, will put the spotlight on innovation in the transport and logistics sector and Sharjah’s state-of-the-art infrastructure. Co-hosted by its logistics subsidiary, Momentum Logistics, the event is supported by Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI), Sharjah Municipality, Sharjah Ports Authority (SPA), Hamriyah Free Zone and Sharjah International Airport Free Zone (SAIF Zone). The Summit takes place on Wednesday 17 May at the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Sharjah is well positioned as an international trade hub with a thriving logistics industry supported by its strategic location, sea ports on both east and west coasts, an international airport and excellent modern road links connecting the emirate to the rest of the Arabian peninsular. The emirate has long been the industrial hub for the UAE accounting for more than 40 percent of the country’s manufacturing production, with its industrial areas and free zones attracting a wide range of industries.

Sharjah’s economy is supported by a diverse production base, the real estate and business services sector accounting for 22 percent of GDP, manufacturing 16 percent, and wholesale and retail trade for 12 percent. This diversification is one of Sharjah’s great strengths and, according to global credit rating agency Standard & Poor’s, the emirate’s economic growth can be expected to increase towards 2020 with real GDP growth reaching 2.8 percent. Sharjah’s fast-growing economy has also attracted a record volume of foreign direct investments which are projected to exceed AED1 billion (US$ 274m) by the end of 2017.

The Sharjah Business Summit 2017 aims to highlight Sharjah’s investment potential and showcase state-of-the-art logistics and supply chain solutions that can help accelerate business growth. The emirate’s transport and logistics infrastructure and services have given it a competitive edge in global trade and commerce, and Gulftainer expects that further innovation and investment in the sector will be key to future economic growth.

The Summit will feature a combination of interactive presentations and roundtable discussions aimed at stimulating dialogue around new investment and innovation in the Emirate of Sharjah.

Innovations featured at the event will include Gulftainer’s land bridge that integrates the company’s ports and logistics offerings by linking seaports to inland container depots, Sharjah Municipality’s new cargo-clearing procedures, and SPA’s customs clearance e-portal.
